Teatro Círculo in Puerto Rico
by Ruben Cruz

From March 24-27 Teatro Círculo presented Teatro Rodante Universitario in Platero y Yo by Spanish poet laureate Juan Ramón Jiménez at the main theater of the University of Puerto Rico. This stage production beautifully adapted and directed by Julia Thomson and María Eugenia Mercado transforms the poetry of the original text into a magical theatrical story that moves audiences of all ages. Using very powerful imagery, choreography and music, this production is a real treat to the senses and a shaker to the mind.
Last year, Platero y Yo traveled to Scotland, Spain and the United States and received five awards for artistic excellence including Best Production and Best Director at the Kennedy Center ACT Festival in Washington DC.
Teatro Círculo presented this production to thousands of elementary school students as part of its effort to reach younger audiences and to strengthen collaboration and artistic exchange with other cultural and educational institutions within the US and Latin America.
