BY LOPE DE VEGA
DIRECTED BY DANIEL ALONSO DE SANTOS

SEPTEMBER 18 – OCTOBER 4, 2026

A story in which dignity doesn’t yield to power

At Teatro Círculo, 64 East 4th Street, NYC

Teatro Círculo presents Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña (Peribáñez and the Commander of Ocaña), a Spanish Golden Age Classic and one of the most celebrated works of Lope de Vega, the “Fénix de los ingenios”, the legendary playwright who transformed the course of world theater.

This timeless tragicomedy explores what happens when the desires of the powerful collide with the dignity of ordinary people. Directed by Daniel Alonso de Santos, with verse direction by Karmele Aranburu, and presented in a version by José Luis Alonso de Santos, this production brings Lope’s masterpiece vividly to life for contemporary audiences.

The story follows a humble and proud peasant farmer, Peribáñez, and his beautiful new wife, Casilda. During a festival, the local nobleman, the Commander of Ocaña is injured by a bull and is cared for by Casilda. He instantly becomes obsessively infatuated with her. The Commander tries multiple schemes to seduce Casilda: wealth, privilege, manipulation, and deceit —including bribing Peribáñez and sending him away to war— believing that power places him above morality and justice.

Will Casilda reject The Commander advances?  How far will Peribáñez go to defend his marriage, his honor, and his very identity? Can wealth and status overcome integrity and true love?

Join Teatro Círculo for a thrilling encounter with one of the great masterpieces of Spanish Golden Age theater, Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña which remains as relevant today as it was four centuries ago—a powerful reminder that courage and dignity can emerge from the most unexpected places.
