PERIBÁÑEZ Y EL COMENDADOR DE OCAÑA

By Lope de Vega

Directed by Dragoi Zuria

Adaptation by Julio Hidalgo

Featuring guest theatre company from Spain, Fundación Siglo de Oro

The fatigue, nostalgia, hunger, lust for life, festive spirit and folk traditions of Lope de Vega’s characters lure us into the theatrical game.

From March 1 to March 3, 2023

Performed in Spanish without translation

At 36th Street Chain Theatre, 3rd Floor

A theater company, “Los olvidados”, arrives at a new Corral de Comedias. Its suitcases, costumes, drums, songs, their emotion at stepping on stage again bring us back this magical representation of Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña (Peribáñez and the Commander of Ocaña).

Lope de Vega presents us in Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña a conflict between its three main characters: Peribáñez, Casilda and the Comendador.

Apparently, one could speak of a love triangle, but the ingenuity of this poet transcends something else, does a human being possess innate dignity? Or is it imposed by social conditions?
