Éter

(Ether)

BY MARIAN PABÓN CATALÁ
DIRECTED BY JULIO RAMOS

MAY 21 – 30, 2027

A man confined to a wheelchair; a woman confined to that man

At Teatro Círculo, 64 East 4th Street, NYC

Teatro Círculo presents Marian Pabón and Julio Ramos straight from Puerto Rico in Éter (Ether) by Marian Pabón Catalá, directed by Julio Ramos. The play had its world premiere at the 2022 Puerto Rican and International Theater Festival of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña produced by theater company De la Legua, Inc. It was also presented at the 2025 Dominican Republic International Theater Festival, at the 50th anniversary of Casa de Teatro in Santo Domingo in 2024, and at the 38th Miami International Hispanic Theater Festival, making its NYC debut in a Teatro Círculo production as part of CALLBACKseries2027.

“Based on the definitions of the word (ether) and the lighting, before the performance even starts, we had the impression that it was a horror story. We weren’t wrong. The story is terrifying. The condemnation that the playwright makes in this text is developed with extraordinary sensitivity and such a unifying humanity that even the most prominent evil can be moved by it.”-Alina Marrero (Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular)

The story unfolds in the dining room of a humble house in a town in southern Puerto Rico. We see a sad Sole who has dedicated herself to her home and caring for her paraplegic husband, Azael, confined to a wheelchair for years after a car accident.

“The kitchen, dining room, and living room of an ordinary house are the stage where the tragedy of a marriage simmers. On the dining room table, on the television, inside the fridge, in the soup bowl, on the cabinets, among the pills, in the glass of orange juice, in the laundry basket, in the plants, in the wheelchair, in the phone call, in the cookies. Everywhere and in every crack, gender violence sprouts like a weed, destroying love, good intentions, mental health, and respect for the dignity of life. Everything is portrayed. Nothing is missing. This play is a mirror and a magnificent spotlight.” – Delvis Griselle Ortiz (El nuevo día)

Éter is a necessary, relevant, raw, human, liberating and poetic justice play.
