With your End of Year Campaign donation, you are helping Teatro Círculo in supporting independent artists, who benefit from our Mi casa es tu casa and FIRST CALL Reading Series programs.
Mi casa es tu casa is a new Teatro Círculo’s program to help ease the financial burdens of a new generation of Latinx companies: 10 weeks of free performance space in our Second Stage for 5 unhoused Latinx companies. Mi casa es tu casa was inspired by the generosity José Cheo Oliveras, Teatro Círculo’s Founding Artistic Director, received from Repertorio Español’s René Buch and Gilberto Zaldívar, Thalia Spanish Theater’s Sylvia Brito, Puerto Rican Travelling Theater’s Miriam Colón, and Pregones’ Rosalba Rolón, when Teatro Círculo was an unhoused theatre company in the early 1990’s.
FIRST CALL Reading Series is a new one-act play Reading Series that supports emerging to mid-career Latinx playwrights in NYC and bridges Latinx communities within the theater space. After inviting playwrights to submit one-act plays, Teatro Círculo and another collaborating theatre company or theatre group choose four plays from four different Latinx playwrights to be part of this new series. Our very first FIRST CALL Reading Series happened in September 2024 in collaboration with Latinx Playwrights Circle’s Media Luna Reading Series, and featured the works of Alejandra Ramos Riera, Franky González, Daniela González Y Pérez and Iraisa Ann Reilly.
For 30 years, Teatro Círculo has been presenting Spanish Golden Age theater plays and contemporary theater works in NYC. Through our work we foster an appreciation of the richness of Iberian and Latin American cultures in the context of pluralism that characterizes New York City. We produce two Main Stage productions, CALLBACKseries and DANCEseries, Master Classes which train Latinx artists in Spanish Versification and playwrighting, our NYSCA BIPOC Affordable Rehearsal Program offering our studio at $10 an hour to BIPOC artists and organizations, and our award-winning Senior Residency, Abuelito, dime, tú, which works with older adults in storytelling and acting.
