Lola Mora:
A Pioneer of Argentine Art
Dolores Candelaria Mora Vega de Hernández, better known as Lola Mora, was a groundbreaking Argentine sculptor, urban planner, and visual artist. Born in Trancas, Tucumán, in 1866, she defied societal norms and became the most celebrated and controversial female sculptor of her time.
Early Career and International Success
In 1895, Mora traveled to Buenos Aires to pursue a scholarship for further studies in Europe. She was granted a generous subsidy and embarked on a journey that would solidify her reputation.
While in Italy, Mora immersed herself in artistic circles and gained international recognition. Her work was featured in prestigious exhibitions, earning awards and accolades. Her self-portrait in Carrara marble won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair.
Upon returning to Argentina, Mora received prestigious commissions, including a statue of Juan Bautista Alberdi in Tucumán and works for the February 20 Monument in Salta. Her most renowned work, The Fountain of the Nereids, caused a sensation upon its unveiling in Buenos Aires.
Controversy and Setbacks
Despite her initial success, Mora faced significant challenges. Her innovative and daring sculptures were deemed scandalous by conservative society, leading to criticism and controversy. Financial difficulties and contractual breaches forced her to mortgage her workshop in Rome.
Political shifts and personal setbacks further hindered Mora’s career. Her monument to Nicolás Avellaneda was dismantled in 1915, and the Fountain of the Nereids was relocated to a less prominent location.
A Pioneer in Multiple Fields
Beyond sculpture, Mora explored other artistic avenues. She experimented with theatrical techniques and sought to introduce a new device called light cinematography.
Legacy and Recognition
Despite the challenges she faced, Mora’s contributions to Argentine art remain significant. Her work challenged societal norms, paved the way for future female artists, and enriched the cultural landscape of Argentina.
In honor of her achievements, the Argentine government established November 17th as the National Day of the Sculptor and the Plastic Arts. Additionally, the Lola Mora Awards were created to recognize individuals who promote gender equality and break stereotypes in the media.
Lola Mora’s legacy serves as an inspiration for artists and advocates alike, reminding us of the power of creativity, perseverance, and breaking barriers.
