María Fontanals / Ella (Spain)

María is honored and excited to join Teatro Círculo again. Born in Barcelona, she is an award-winning actress and faculty member at HB Studio as well as a member of their Artistic Council. She has worked with renowned Off-Broadway theater companies such as Teatro Círculo, IATI, Repertorio Español, Dixon Place, Theater for the New City, to name a few. She has won several HOLA, ACE and ATI awards for her work.

Fernando Gazzaniga / Él (Argentina)

Actor who has developed his career in many countries of Latin America beyond his own. He has participated in several theater productions, and more than 10 well-known TV series in Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, where he has also performed as a TV Host. Fernando studied Dramatic Arts in Argentina and continued his training at HB Studio in New York City. He has performed in more than 30 television advertisements and as a model has been the face of several important commercial and fashion brands. His most recent theater performances in the US, include ‘El alcalde de Zalamea’, ‘Fuenteovejuna’, ‘La dama boba’, ‘Life is a Dream’, ‘Entremeses de Cervantes’, ‘The Playboy of Seville’, ‘La monja alférez’, and ‘Don’t Leave Me Behind’ for which he received two ATI Awards. He has also starred in the movies ‘Las tetas caídas’ and ‘Lo entenderá’.

CREATIVE TEAM AND CREW

Fernando Travesí / Playwright (Spain)

Writer and playwright, author of plays premiered in Spain and the United States; and of narratives published in Spain and Colombia. In Spain he won the Calderón de la Barca National Theatre Award with the play ‘Ilusiones rotas’. And, in Colombia, he won the Short Novel Award convened by the publishing house Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) for his manuscript ‘La vida imperfecta’.

Some of his plays include ‘Palabras de amor’, ‘Sangre en la alfombra’, ‘¡Tú, come bollos!’, ‘Acuérdate de mí’, ‘El diván’, which have toured various stages in Spain, including the Spanish Contemporary Authors’ Theatre Showcase, and New York.

Fernando Travesí holds a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and is a specialist in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from the Pontifical Javeriana University of Bogotá (Colombia), where he received the Order of University Merit for the quality of his academic work. His artistic training was completed at the Royal Conservatory of Music where he completed his classical piano studies, as well as at the Cristina Rota Theatre School (Madrid) where he studied dramatic art and playwriting.

Over more than two decades of working to defend and protect human rights in countries in conflict, Fernando has lived in Albania, the former Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Colombia and has carried out missions around the world. He currently lives in New York and directs the International Center for Transitional Justice.

Leyma López / Director (Cuba)

Received her degree in Directing and Education with a major in Theater from the Instituto Superior Pedagógico in Havana and has participated in several courses taught by legendary directors. Ms. López serves as Resident Director of the Spanish Repertory Theater Company in New York City having first forged her relationship with the company when she was awarded the Van Lier Scholarship for Young Directors in 2012.

Since then, she has directed a number of successful productions for Repertorio Español including “Por gusto”, “El loco por fuerza”, “Aire frío”, “Hierba mala nunca muere”, “La fiaca”, “La Celestina”, “Valor, agravio y mujer”, “Filomena Marturano”, “La dama boba”, among others.

She also collaborates with ID-Studio on different occasions and with PRTT/Teatro Pregones as co-director, assistant director and was the director of “The Desire of the Astronaut”. Ms. López has been awarded several ACE, ATI, LATA and HOLA awards for direction in Comedy, Drama and Spanish Golden Age.

Israel Franco-Müller / Production Designer (Puerto Rico)

Production Manager and Set, Lighting & Costume Designer. International theatre designer whose works have been seen in: Alcalá and Almagro’s Classical Theater Festival in Spain 2022, Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival in Scotland, Cuba, Mexico, among other countries. Awards: Outstanding Costume Design- ‘Fuente Ovejuna’ (Teatro Círculo, ATI 2023), Outstanding Production Designer- ‘El caballero de Olmedo’ (Teatro Círculo, HOLA 2018), Best Set and Costume Design- ‘El burlador de Sevilla’ (Teatro Círculo, ATI 2019). Franco-Müller holds a Ph.D. in Theater Design and Technical Production from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Milton M. Cordero / Projections & Sound Designer (Puerto Rico)

He grew up in Caguas where he performed for the community theater group and took music classes after school. His subsequent studies in theater and communications led him to develop a keen interest in digital technologies and their potential for the live arts.

In 2009 he won the Raúl Juliá Scholarship for his graduate studies in Film Industry at Carlos III University in Madrid, Spain. After that he worked for Canzion Films and Wiesner Distribution, developing marketing campaigns for movies like “Corazón de León” and “Truman”.

In 2012 he joined TanTai Teatro Company to explore and further the use of imagery and projection in the live arts.  

Kareliz Michelle De Jesús Pietri / Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Hair and Makeup Designer, Costume Consultant (Puerto Rico)

Born in Old San Juan, PR. She has dedicated herself to the performing arts since they was a child. Studied at the José Julián Acosta Specialized Theater School. She started at WAPA Televisión in 2007 as a comedian, makeup artist and costume designer. In 2012 moved to Florida to work at Telemundo and moved to New York in 2019 where they pursue the same luck of being able to work both on stage and behind the scenes.
